Borer treatment & extermination

Borer treatment in Tauranga, Waihi Beach, Katikati, Matamata and surrounds. We use specialist borer timber treatments to get rid of the destructive borer beetle.

Older Bay of Plenty homes and buildings are regularly infested with borer. The main species we deal with is the common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum). They are noticed buy the small holes they create and the sawdust (know as frass) that is left behind. They are mainly seen in older buildings & furniture with untreated timber. Borer will sometimes infest unexpected items, we have even seen it infest chipboard flooring! We also occasionally encounter the two tooth longhorn which is a larger borer native to New Zealand.

Borer has a 2-7 year lifecycle most of which is spent in the grub stage chewing on your timber. It emerges as an adult usually between November and February. They hatch when temperature and humidity combine to produce ideal conditions to breed. It is noticed by the frass left when drilling out of the timber and flights of borer exiting the timber. It then mates and eggs are laid in cracks in timber and particularly old emergence holes and the cycle continues.

If left untreated borer will continue to cause expensive damage, we have seen properties that have required new piles and replacement of floors.

Control and treatment of borer

If left untreated borer will continue to cause expensive damage, we have seen properties that have required new piles and replacement of floors. We have a range of treatment options to control borer ranging from timber spray applications to gassing of difficult to reach areas. Often borer requires more than one method to gain control. We inspect your property and make treatment recommendations dependant on the construction, access and areas that are infested.
