Bay of Plenty homes are regularly invaded by carpet beetle. The larvae of this pest love natural fibres. They cause severe damage to expensive carpets, clothing, furniture and taxidermy.
Adult carpet beetles emerge in spring and summer. They feed on pollen and nectar. After mating they lay their eggs in or near a food source for their young. This could in a bird’s nest where they will eat feathers or in your carpet which then causes a problem for you. The warmer the temperature the quicker they breed. This can quickly lead to heavily infested carpets. They can have a life cycle of 1-3 years most of which is spent in the larval stage eating your carpet.
The carpet beetle larvae love dark undisturbed areas under furniture, the edges of rooms and similar. Often damage goes unnoticed for long periods until furniture is moved.
Carpet beetles are not considered to be harmful to humans or pets. In rare instances, the bristles on carpet beetle larvae can create skin irritations that can feel like a bite. This is like the sensation caused by fiberglass insulation and can be very itchy.
